Punch Brothers returned to New York on March 2nd where it all started 15 years ago. Performing at the Beacon theater for the first time in four years, a venue they are more than familiar with, usually performing at annually.
The bands masterful unique blend of bluegrass, folk and rock makes them a rarity in the genre, therefore attracting large crowds looking to get their fill of their distinctive sound. Chris Thile’s plays the mandolin in such an aggressive multi-dimensional style that it tethers on the edge of Rock and Bluegrass. Just one of the examples of what excites the fans.
The Hell on Church Street tour is a celebration of not only the Punch Brothers music but also of the songs of their latest album of the same name. Released mid-January 2022 Hell on Church Street is the Punch Brothers reinterpretation of Tony Rice’s 1983 classic Church Street Blues, which was and still is a major influence on the band.
Between the comedy banter of Thile and banjo player Noam Pikelny the boys stood in center staged huddled in a semi-circle playing their instruments with such precision and comfort. I watch in bewilderment how Fiddle player Gage Witcher’s bow would move so close to Thile’s head, then such precise movements to avoid such a strike. This band is so well tuned in all aspects of the performance.
Not only do the Punch Brothers play great music but they also know great music, inviting Haley Heynderickx to open the night’s performance was an extraordinary, sweet delight. Be sure to check out her LP, I Need to Start a Garden.
