Michelle Wake will follow her October 4th release of her EP FOR NOW with a show at Ridgewood’s Footlight bar.
Wake’s life as a musician in New York stems from a childhood in Michigan, when
she began playing songs for family and friends before she could read or write.
From her first foray into performance, she’s worked tirelessly: playing in
Michigan, studying in Sydney, Australia, and eventually moving to Manhattan to push herself further and continue honing her craft. Using the city as her home base over the past two years, Michelle has become actively involved in the local scene, forming a tight-knit group of collaborators amongst fellow musicians and earning a loyal collective of fans. For Now represents the latest iteration of Michelle Wake’s indefatigable effort. Expect to find the ambient vocals and narrative lyricism particular to her style as Wake, pretty and provocative, draws and keeps her listeners’ attention by telling a unique and compelling story. Pop and soul influences, from Amy Winehouse, Feist, and Florence+ the Machine to St. Vincent, can be counted among the touchstones to Wake’s aural style, which showcases a subtly innovative compositional manner.
The EP is comprised of two pieces. “A Soiree” conveys a process of self-discovery derived from Michelle’s experiences in the city, and “I Got You Beat” stands as a tribute to conquering life’s biggest, baddest fears. For Now is purposed something like a preview, its pair of tunes giving the listener a taste as simultaneously fleeting and satisfying as its moniker implies, letting them know Michelle Wake is just getting started.
