“All the girls to the front! Girls to the front!” Softcult’s drummer shouted into the mic. Women in the audience glanced around, hesitant at first, —some smiling awkwardly as they made their way toward the stage. But seconds later, the ground was shaking. The crowd erupted,— jumping, thrashing, and stomping in a frenzy,— electrified by the lyrics of BWBB: “Boys will be boys but these boys aren’t men, and these girls didn’t ask to be touched by them.”

Canadian grunge band Softcult delivers a sound that’s equal parts dreamy, gloomy, and punchy. As self-proclaimed Riot Grrrls, they’re unafraid to make noise—whether political, personal, or both.

After a memorable set from indie rock band, She’s Green, Softcult stormed the stage in a haze of red lights, distorted guitar riffs, and headbangs. With a crowd nearly as energized as the band, their show at the Bowery Ballroom was unforgettable. And as the guitarist slammed his guitar into the stage before running off, one thing was certain: this wasn’t a night anyone would forget.
